Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Associated Rhinocerebral Mucormycosis and Complications: A Case Report

Background: Mucormycosis is a rare fatal infection caused by ubiquitous fungus from the order of Mucorales, which can have varying clinical presentations. Immunocompromised patients are particularly susceptible to mucormycosis and suffer consequences if not treated adequately. COVID-19 with its immunomodulatory properties has been associated wide range secondary bacterial fungal infections. We present case rapidly progressive rhinocerebral post-COVID-19 subsequent development several complications disease. Case Report: A 62-year-old male patient history hypertension diabetes mellitus type II, presented 14 days recovery right facial swelling, erythema, eye proptosis. Throughout his disease, developed blindness cranial nerve palsies. He was also found palatal necrotic lesions, consistent diagnosis mucormycosis. The patient’s disease complicated Garcin syndrome, meningitis, orbital apex cavernous sinus thrombosis, brain infarction, hemorrhage. Despite all measures interventions, died. Conclusion: treatments an increased risk infections like As such, high index suspicion needed amongst healthcare workers for early treatment such opportunistic since prompt marked improvement in outcome. Furthermore, optimal glucose control judicious use corticosteroids decreases developping life threatening superinfections.
